The three national finance-sector agreements are among the most generous on sick leave. The banking agreement guarantees 100% of what you would earn at work for 18 months of leave due to illness, though its article 43 says nothing about work accidents. The savings bank agreement pays full actual salary for the first 12 months and 87.5% during the extension, and covers the first three days at 100% the first two times in a year and at 80% after that. The insurance agreement tops up pay whatever the cause, for up to 18 months and while the contract lasts. On a salary of 1800 euros, 60 days off sick in banking add up to €3,600: €2,412 of statutory benefit and €1,188 paid by the employer. Without an agreement you would receive the benefit only.

Banking: 18 months at 100%

The banking agreement (BOE-A-2025-47, article 43) is short and clear: for 18 months of leave due to illness, the employer tops up the benefit to 100% of the pay you would be owed under the agreement as if you were working. It makes no distinction between days, so day one is paid like day one hundred. There are two limits. If Social Security suspends the benefit, the top-up goes with it. And work accidents are not in the article. 25th agreement, in force 2024 to 2026 and extendable.

On a salary of €1,800, 60 days of leave for illness give €2,412.00 of statutory benefit and €1,188.00 of top-up: you receive €3,600.00, the same as at work. Without the agreement you would lose the first three days and get 60% up to day 20, as set by Royal Decree 53/1980.

Savings banks: a full year, then 87.5%

The agreement for savings banks and savings institutions (BOE-A-2024-11521, articles 64 and 65) uses actual salary. For the first 12 months you get 100%; during the six-month extension, 87.5%; and the same 87.5% continues if you are discharged after 18 months while the INSS decides on permanent incapacity, up to month 30 at most. That last stretch depends on a decision the calculator cannot know, so it leaves it out.

The first three days have their own rule: 100% the first two times in a calendar year and 80% from the third. On €1,800 a month, a first 30-day leave pays €1,800.00; a third, €1,764.00. 2024-2026 agreement.

Insurance: any cause, while the contract lasts

The agreement for insurance, reinsurance and collaborating mutuas (BOE-A-2026-16077, article 64) came into force on 12 August 2026 and replaces the 2020 to 2024 text. The employer pays the gap between the Social Security benefit and the pay you would earn at work, for illness or accident, for 18 months at most and while the contract continues.

A 30-day work accident on a €1,800 salary gives €1,365.00 of benefit, because the employer pays the day of the accident as wages and from the next day you get 75% of the base under Decree 3158/1966. The agreement adds €435.00, bringing it to €1,800.00.

What the table leaves out

These are the national sector agreements. Many banks and insurers have company agreements that improve on them, and the more favourable condition must be kept. The calculator uses the article published in the BOE: if your payslip says otherwise, your payslip prevails. For the 545-day limit on any leave, see the maximum length page.

Common questions

Does the banking agreement top up leave after a work accident?

Its article 43 is headed “Illness” and only deals with sick leave due to illness; work accidents and occupational disease are not mentioned. That is why the calculator adds no sector top-up in those cases. Your bank may have its own agreement or a more favourable practice, so ask human resources or the staff representatives.

What happens at a savings bank if this is my third short leave of the year?

Days 1 to 3 of absence due to illness are paid at 100% the first two times in a calendar year and at 80% from the third, unless the institution's medical service confirms the illness. On a 1800 euro salary, a third 30-day leave pays €1,764, against €1,800 for the first.

Does the insurance top-up continue if I am dismissed while off sick?

No. Article 64 of the insurance agreement limits the top-up to a maximum of 18 months and to the time the contract remains in force. If employment ends, you keep receiving the statutory temporary incapacity benefit, but the employer stops paying the extra part that came from the agreement.
